Becoming an MRC volunteer is as simple as filing an application and passing the background check, including a CORI check.
However, just being a name on a roster isn't enough for most people; they want to get involved with all of our activities. We will be working with partners, both public and private, and many of these agencies and activies require some level of training. The Medical reserve Corps, at a national level, developed a list of Core Competencies. We also developed a list of skills that would be very beneficial for our members.
Many of the classes in the CORE COMPETENCY list and specialized training are able to be online through FEMA, MRC-TRAIN, and through the University of Minnesota. They range from under an hour long to in a few cases up to three hours. Many of these classes are required of Police and Firefighters nationwide, so you will be recieving some instruction which almost all first responders are required to take. Many of the other courses are designed to help our medical and non-medical staff work safely in disaster shelters, alternate care centers, and Emergency Dispensing Sites.
We don't have a hard and fast rule about how fast you must get the required training completed. Rather, we look at everyone on a case to case basis. you complete the training and requirement, the more responsibility you be given and more opportunties will appear!
Some people may not be able to complete the training online. We work with our volunteers to find training options, whether it is sponsoring the exact class or a similar class, or working with area MRC's to hold joint training classes.
